Feature article in regional magazine :
Life in the Finger Lakes magazine, Winter 2006
We've been watching the Strong Museum expansion process as we dashed past on the way to errands over the past year or so, and found it fascinating. I contacted the editor of Life in the Finger Lakes magazine to see if he'd be interested in an article about the museum's evolution into the National Museum of Play, not really expecting to get an assignment, since there had been lots of publicity about the place already. He said yes, I spent an hour or so at the museum, and presto - here it is! Just another instance of the joys and freedom of freelancing - the ability to write about what interests me or catches my eye; the fact that everything around me is a potential assignment; and the importance of never assuming.
Fun Around Every Corner
Expanded Rochester museum takes "play" to amazing levels
By Ruth E. Thaler-Carter
Regardless of age, "Wow!" is what everyone is likely say after entering, experiencing and leaving the newly expanded Strong - National Museum of Play in Rochester.
You don't have to be a kid, or even the relative of one, to enjoy this excitingly re-envisioned venue. You might want to avoid the place if you have a low tolerance for noise or have a traditional definition of "museum" that includes formal, static viewing of masterful artwork and eschews activity, fun, interactivity and little kids having a blast, but you would be missing a delightful experience. Just watching children and their adults (parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, family friends, older siblings, educators, nannies and babysittters) throughout the open, brightly lit and colorful space will warm the day and melt the heart of the grouchiest curmudgeon. This place has an amazing environment and is a huge plus for the Rochester region.
