"I can write about anything!"™

Apartments.com magazine, July-September 2006

Breaking into local publications has been somewhat of a challenge - Rochester has few that either use freelance writers or pay the kinds of rates I’ve been used to receiving from DC-based and national outlets. Perseverance pays off, though. When the local daily newspaper started a new mgazine for apartment dwellers, I was in place for assignments (partly because I had been involved with the local chapter of the National Apartments Association and partly because I’m coordinator of the local Editorial Freelancers Association chapter - yay, networking!).

This article was especially fun to write because I’ve watched the complex as it was being built; it looks and sounds like a great place to live; and I like seeing good news about downtown, now that I’m a denizen - my husband puts it - myself. The developers were among the funniest and most enthusiastic people I’ve ever interviewed, and the residents were fun to meet as well.

A smooth landing - "A 20-year dream" comes true at Corn Hill Landing

By Ruth E. Thaler-Carter, Contributing Writer

The 127 apartments at Corn Hill Landing in downtown Rochester are bringing a dream to life.

“I love it here – I’m one of the very happy residents,” says City Council member Carolee Conklin, who moved into her two-bedroom, two-bathroom loft apartment from a large, 12-room house with a big yard. “It’s a very diverse community of people and ages, in part because it’s the only complex in the county with such a variety of layouts and apartment sizes. So there’s something for pretty much anyone – graduate students, working people, young couples, retirees. It’s also a wonderful neighborhood to walk in, with views of historic homes on one side and the river on the other.”
